Think of it as wiping your ass:

If you wipe the dingle berries (In this case, characters) from your ass, your ass (Server) is now clean.

If you don't wipe, all of that shit builds up, smells, chafes your ass when you walk, which in return, makes you move slower since you won't leave your house because everyone can smell your dirty swamp ass from miles away.
