Dude, unless you/your parents run a home server and have a static IP, then unscrewing the Koaxel cable has to work.

Call your ISP, make sure your Dynamic.

i think we created our own wireless network because of the 2 other laptops in the house

also the command prompt and typing ipconfig/renew did not work either

how do i know for sure if i have a static ip or not

There is a 99% chance your not static, because you pay like a lot extra a month, and only people who run home servers [etc.] pay for a static IP.
All home users [like us here] are Dynamic... oh and just fyi, I called my ISP and they came up with some BULLSHIT excuse a while back why the IP wouldn't change.

All I did was unplug the Koaxel and it changed instantly. They don't know what they are talking about half the time.

Just unplug all 3 wires from your modem [AND YOUR ROUTER IF YOU HAVE ONE] leave it unplugged for 10 mins.

95% chance of working. If it doesn't work everytime/ever other time, chances are its the person doing it wrong.

I thought something was wrong with my modem, until I figured out myself I was doing it wrong [ISP didn't help 1 damn bit]

No you don't have to do ipconfig/release then ipconfig/renew in CMD...

This works just as good if not better [worked way better for me]:
1. Turn off computer
2. Unplug EVERYTHING [3 cords] from your modem [and router if you have one]
3. wait 10 minutes
4. Plug back in the modem/router
5. Cold boot your pc [turn on your computer]

Check your IP here
www.ipmonkey.com

PS. Most imporant you make sure the Koaxel is unscrewed from the modem [the cable that screws in to the back most likely]

Resetting Modem > SmoothPing
Even though SmoothPing is GREAT, it is just another peice of proxy software, getting in the way of you internet speed.
Having your modem reset really makes things easier and most of the time faster.
